Panama earns Guinness record with 5,000 painting kids

Panama earned a Guinness world record Saturday when 5,084 children painted a mural simultaneously for three and a half minutes as part of 100th anniversary celebrations for the Panama Canal, organizers said. Panamanian painter Olga Sinclair was behind the massive work of art depicting the canal locks at the El Prado promenade in Panama City. She said she wanted to break the record to encourage "Panama to dream big" and show "that our children can touch the sky with their hands."

Spanish officials to start talks with Panama over canal cost row

By Lomi Kriel PANAMA CITY (Reuters) - A Spanish government team will meet officials in Panama on Monday to try and end a cost dispute between a Spanish-led consortium expanding the Panama Canal and the waterway's operator that threatens to stall the huge infrastructure project. Spain's public works minister, Ana Pastor, begins a day full of meetings by holding discussions with officials for the building consortium fronted by Spanish construction firm Sacyr known as Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC).

Panama's president demands firms complete canal expansion

Panama City, Jan 2 (EFE).- Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli on Thursday demanded that the consortium working on the $5.25 billion expansion of the Central American nation's inter-oceanic waterway complete the project for the amount the parties originally agreed. The head of state spoke out a day after Grupo Unidos por el Canal, led by Spanish construction giant Sacyr Vallehermoso, formally advised the Panama Canal Authority that it would suspend work in three weeks if the authority does not agree to pay an additional $1.6 billion to cover cost overruns.

Spain's Crown Prince Felipe takes part in ceremony honoring Balboa

Tourism to contribute more than $2.5 bn to Panama's economy in 2013

Panama City, Jul 4 (EFE).- Tourism is expected to generate more than $2.5 billion for the Panamanian economy in 2013, the Panama Tourism Authority, or ATP, said. "The revenues from tourism during 2013 are going to be above $2.5 billion. In tourist visits, I think we're (at) 875,000 tourists, up to now, and estimates are that 2013 will close on the order of 2.2 million," ATP administrator Salomon Shamah said at a press conference.
