California cross-border airport clears key hurdle with backing from US immigration authorities

SAN DIEGO - U.S. Customs and Border Protection says it has reached an agreement with an investor group to clear the way for construction of the nation's first cross-border airport terminal connecting San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico. Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske said during a visit to San Diego on Thursday that the agreement requires the investor group to pay the salaries of U.S. border inspectors and the cost of inspection facilities on a pedestrian bridge between Tijuana's existing airport and the United States. He expects construction to begin on the U.S. side next month.

Republican Kevin Faulconer takes big lead in race for San Diego mayor to replace Filner

SAN DIEGO - A Republican city councilman held a commanding lead Tuesday in a contest for mayor of San Diego to replace Bob Filner, who resigned amid a torrent of sexual harassment allegations. If Kevin Faulconer holds his lead, San Diego would be the nation's largest city with a Republican mayor. He would be the only Republican to lead a major city in California, where Democrats hold all statewide offices. With 238,000 ballots counted, Faulconer led Democratic Councilman David Alvarez by 55.2 per cent to 44.8 per cent. Many expected a much closer contest.

Faulconer takes big lead in race to replace disgraced Filner as San Diego mayor

SAN DIEGO - A Republican city councilman took a big lead Tuesday in an election to replace the disgraced Bob Filner as San Diego mayor, but early returns showed him falling short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff. Kevin Faulconer led a field of 11 candidates with 45 per cent of the vote, according to a large batch of results released minutes after polls closed. His strong showing gives Republicans a chance to recapture an office they held for much of the last four decades and an opportunity for a rare win leading a major American city.
