Mexico forward Vela rules himself out of World Cup

(Reuters) - Mexico forward Carlos Vela has said he is "not mentally and emotionally" ready to play in this year's World Cup and has told the Mexican FA not to select him for the tournament in Brazil. Vela's statement was carried on the Mexico FA's website (www.femexfut.org.mx) on Tuesday after the 24-year-old, who plays for Real Sociedad in Spain, told them he would not be available for selection. "Vela says he is not 100 percent mentally and emotionally ready," the statement said.

Football: Opening day wins for Real Sociedad, Valencia

Real Sociedad warmed up for their Champions League qualifier with Lyon on Tuesday in fine fashion as goals from Carlos Vela and Haris Seferovic handed them a 2-0 opening day victory over Getafe. The Basques put the departures of manager Philippe Montanier and star midfielder Asier Illarramendi to Rennes and Real Madrid respectively behind them with a display full of invention that was too much for a disappointing Getafe side.
