Tennis: Australia pick teens to face France in Davis Cup

Captain Pat Rafter Tuesday named teenagers Nick Kyrgios, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Jordan Thompson in Australia's team to face France in the Davis Cup World Group first round later this month. With Bernard Tomic out with a hip injury, Rafter is looking to youth to complement the experience of Lleyton Hewitt and doubles player Chris Guccione. Kyrgios, 18, and Kokkinakis, 17, both reached the second round of the Australian Open last week, while 19-year-old Thompson won the wildcard playoff to qualify for the Open and will travel with the squad to France as the back-up player.

Tennis: Tomic steers Australia back to Davis Cup World Group

Australia are back in the Davis Cup World Group for the first time in six years, with Bernard Tomic supplying the crucial third point against Poland with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win over Lukasz Kubot on Sunday. That victory gave Pat Rafter's team an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five World Group playoff tie on clay. Tomic, often the bad boy of Australian tennis, won his second singles match of the tie after he and Lleyton Hewitt gave Australia a 2-0 lead on the opening day with straight sets wins.
